EndNote Toolbar not appearing in Word after auto-updates..

The problem could be due to automatic updates for your computer which may have disabled the Cite while you write add-in in Word.

Try the following:

First check to see if Word has listed the add-in as disabled:

Word 2003:

Click the "Help menu" and select "About Microsoft Office Word."

About Word

Click "Disabled Items."

Disabled Items

Highlight any EndNote item(s) and click "Enable."

Click Close.

Click OK.

Word 2007:

Click the Office button in the top left corner of the Word 2007 window.

From the bottom of this dialog choose Word Options.

Word 2007

Click on the Add-Ins tab.

From the Manage drop-down menu select Disabled Items then select Go.

Disabled Items

Highlight any EndNote item(s) and click "Enable."

Click Close.

Click OK.

If prompted, select to allow the file(s) to be loaded by Word. Close and re-open Word when this is done and check the operation of the toolbar.

If you are still getting the error try:

  1. Open Word, and go to the help menu, and run "Detect and Repair".
  2. Check the "Discard my settings and restore default settings" button, and click ok.
  3. Restart your computer and Click the Start menu > Programs (or All Programs) > EndNote > Configure EndNote. Install the Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools again.
  4. First open EndNote, then open Word and try the tools.
